High-Traffic Web Sites: Server Market Share

A recent slashdot thread called attention to the value of the long-running netcraft survey of web server market share. It also brought up a survey of investor-information servers at fortune 500 companies, conducted by ENT magazine.

That made me curious what the web server of choice is among the top 100-1,000 web sites as ranked by traffic, to answer the question What web server software is used to answer front-door requests by the busiest sites on the web? There are lots of lists available that rank sites by traffic, I picked three popular rankings (July 13, 2000) and sent an http head request to each high traffic site, then ran the Server: headers through webalizer. The resulting breakdown of web server use on high-traffic sites is pretty interesting, presented in the three tables below, with links to the sites that provided the traffic rankings.

NB: Not every site returned a Server: header, so total number of servers will be short in each list. Name variations for Netscape, Apache, Microsoft, and Zeus web servers are combined, the others are exact strings.
