enter the dragonfruit [11 photos] years ago (maybe 1999?) i went to buy some sobe black tea, and discovered the store only had SoBe Dragon, the “dragon fruit” flavor in stock.
the dragon drink contained the desired amount of caffeine, so i bought it, laughing to myself that there was no such thing as a dragonfruit, what a silly thing for a beverage company to name their drink after some made-up fruit.
then last year trader joe's here started carrying dried dragonfruit., which looks intensely purple and tastes very bland. when i looked up “dragon fruit” in wikipedia, i discovered its actually a cactus fruit called a Pitaya
this week our local asian grocery store had some in stock, so i bought it and we all tasted it for dessert last night. rachel and nick were not so fond of it. i thought it tasted like a very mild (and insanely overpriced) kiwi.
