my first and only jam-making lesson was during a camping trip in capitol reef national park in the late 1970s or early 1980s. we were camping in the old orchard, and my brothers & i started picking up lots of fruit - mulberries, random stone fruit (peaches or apricots i think), so anna put it all into a pot on the camping stove, said something about “half sugar, half fruit, cook it until its jam” and that's been the basic recipe ever since. it never comes out perfect, but it always tastes good and gets eaten. this is the idea:
