i woke up first, around 6am to the sound of a swarm of bees or yellow jackets. it was so loud, i worried that we had parked our tent near a hive, or that the yellow jackets all over our campsite last night were foreshadowing a swarm that i was hearing now.
so i went out looking for the hive or swarm - and didn't find it. instead, i found the hum of bees and other winged insects everywhere - and at this meadow nearby, every square foot was filled with insects buzzing around at ground level, presumably pollinating and otherwise going about their morning business.

camping in gifford pinchot national forest [114 photos] kat organized a camping trip this weekend in gifford pinchot national forest. we got to make s'mores, descend into an icy lava tube on a hot day, hike, pick huckleberries. sequoia got to experience camping for the very first time, and other than the sleeping bag bit, i think he loved it.
