my 40th birthday [32 photos] i thought my 40th birthday was going to escape unobserved.
my work invited me down to san diego on short notice, so i scored a sort-of birthday dinner with boss & colleague on monday night; then spent my actual birthday juggling new responsibilities after a round of layoffs :-( on friday there was free breakfast at work in honor of the january birthday people, which was fun as i'm rarely in an office where i can be part of that sort of thing.
in encinitas, anna made me a fancy dinner, and the folks gifted me with a headlamp to support my intention to exercise more frequently at night after the kids are in bed, along with some new clothes.
when i arrived home in portland on friday night, rachel immediately departed for a Society of Women Engineers function and i fell asleep on the couch watching tv with nick.
i woke up to the sounds of rachel leading austin swinney and his brother scott into our house. they decided to fly up from san diego and surprise me for the weekend.
saturday night rachel produced yet another surprise-- our plans for a small birthday dinner expanded to include the kids, then the brothers swinney -- but when we arrived at the restaurant, it turns out rachel had booked a private room and a bunch more friends were waiting to surprise us. we had a birthday dinner of japanese food, followed by a caravan back to our house where we played with legos and video games until well past nick's bedtime.
