rachel taught him to do this when he's hungry, and he really does it. except when he gets too hungry, in which case he reverts to screaming and wailing at full volume.

sean dreilinger: a lactation nurse suggested we make big “oh” faces in front of the baby to get him to imitate us and learn to open his mouth wider (for better latching-on during breastfeeding). he figured it out, and rachel says he's getting better at latching on.

sequoia starts smiling [11 photos] sequoia started smiling in response to other people during week four, and he's finally consistent enough in his smiling response that we can photograph it. and, rachel figured out that tickling him behind his ear is a pretty good way to bring on a smiling episode :-).
