Picture of my Father, Frank

I don't know how old he was in the picture; my guess is about 4. He was born in September 1905 to Finnish parents in North Beach, San Francisco, California. This made him about 7 months when the 1906 great SF Earthquake hit. His Father was a fisherman and kept his commercial fishing boat in what is now Fisherman's Wharf. When the EQ hit and the fires started, the parents gathered their children and belongings, went to the boat, and motored across the bay to Berkeley to make a new home.

The angelic boy in the picture grew into a sensitive, idealistic young man and was shattered by not finding a way to live his values, became an alcoholic, and died a troubled and despairing man. His frequent quotation was, “We live in illusions and die in despair.”

Because he looks so much as we might imagine Julian Assange to have looked at that age, I fantasize that my Father might have reincarnated as Julian Assange and finally found a way to manifest his values. That is my fantasy “feel-good” wish!
