5' 4" Amazon Eradicates Escaped Running Bamboo [10 photos] To my horror a stalk of bamboo emerged outside of its contained area. I had to start digging at the visible shoot which was about 3 feet from the container and carefully follow the root system back to the point of escape. I was extremely careful in finding every shoot. It took 4 hours with a pick. I had to take out 4 banana trees because the bamboo had speared thru them. I found at least 20 underground shoots. Very scary. I was covered with mud afterward. My love of bamboo has eroded. The tiny slender shoot that showed above ground was attached deeply underground to a massive root system that would have soon exploded above ground. This pic is the massive hairy root system I extracted. I had to erode the soil with a power hose to pull the root system out cleanly.
