| Lighthearted Graduation Speech written and performed with my classmate and longtime friend Joslyn Parenti, June 18, 1994. |

| Graduation Ceremony |
|---|
| Monday morning, September 18, 1992 80 entering classmates, looking hungry, fresh and new. Saturday, June 18th, 1994, We gather here, for one last hour, a little wiser than before You may expect: a rap-computer-blading-show, as clothing falls away Our reputation exceeds us, a few words are all we'll say. Ready for the executive summary? We'll share before we start: The whole here is much greater than the sum of every part |
| Our Teachers |
| We choose to speak of GSLIS, and praise its sexy features Let us begin this adventure, with the delicate topic of teachers. Our teachers are the dread-and-fear of students coast to coast It rings on every listserv whose students get the most Homework, that is, teachers gave us plenty-- eventually worthwhile "Co-operation, not Competition" is the phrase that makes me smile Where one is weak, another is strong-- from one another we learn Everyone has something to share, and as a teacher takes their turn SEAN: You've taught us to be: JOSLYN: savvy, outspoken, assertive, diplomatic, intelligent, inventive, progressive, competitive, insightful, understanding, respectful and clairvoyant . . . SEAN: Wow! I'm so skillful now-- I'm still seeking employment! The knowledge grows like rutabagas, teaching is an Art The whole here is much greater than the sum of every part |
| Our Classmates |
| We need a sense of humor, eight long days a week To dispel misconceptions, "All Librarians are Geeks!" Many people imagine us as outdated, old, antique We represent a profession far more positive and unique I've worked with people from Ghana, Denmark, Costa Rica, and Jamul The buzzword is diversity I'll just call it "way cool." |
| Our Classes |
| Through endless classes we've suffered studied, repeating things we've
learned: "Conduct User Studies!" "Take a Firm Stand on Censorship!" "Books should be Read, not Burned!"
The hours are long, the questions tough, there's reading by the ream |
| Information Profession |
| "This profession leads to thankless jobs," our mentors were
quick to state So we'll come in early, slave all day, and wind up working late. Wanna see where our profession is going in the next ten years? Shut your eyes, Open your mind, and imagine with us here. See yourself, older, wiser, ten short years away. In our collective minds, that future's living here today We Each guide a piece of tomorrow, with our heart our head and hand To realize this vision, we must unite and understand Stay networked and connected, it's not too late to start The whole here is much greater than the sum of every part |
| School Politics |
| They tried to close the school and push us all around We fought back with Education-- no one can close US down! Chancellor Young dropped off his letter bomb, and "GSLIS" was no more The suits stole our name in battle, but "G-S-E-I-S" wins the War. Information + Education = something very smart The whole here is much greater than the sum of every part |
| Our Audience |
| Okay, that's it, we're finished now, we hope you're having fun One more rhyme to part with, plus a little more to come (or: "now the ceremony's done," depending on our slot) To our audience-- supportive family, friends, & guests: We'd all like to thank you for your help, we know tonight you'll rest. This room holds our community, keep us in your heart The whole here is much greater than the sum of every part
