A Hatful of Rain

i grieve by her grave and weep from the pain,
her loss i can't understand.
For hours i mourn drop tears into rain...
holding her hat in my hand.
i leave tombstone with flowers laid on,
her soul clouds can not contain...
towards the ocean i'm traveling on...
holding a hatful of rain.

When the raging storm on the sea is calm,
and only blue remains,
atop the old rocks i'm walking along...
holding a hatful of rain.
When the fires have burned and the mountain lies calm,
one tree may withstand such flame,
and off of this mountain to the railroad i'm gone...
holding a hatful of rain.

When affairs fall quiet from love gone wrong,
from beating hearts refrain.
i stand alone and wait too long...
holding a hatful of rain.
When every last car of the train has passed,
two endless rails remain.
i walk these tracks in silence at last...
holding a hatful of rain.

When every last pray-er in the church has passed on,
and the Holy light remains,
before the altar i kneel as strong...
holding a hatful of rain.
When every bone of my body is gone,
and only my soul remains,
beware of the ghost that is singing my song...
wearing a hatful of rain.
