A Shame

as the sun sets across the golden hills
it leaves no shadows in my mind
within or without
beyond a shadow of a doubt
sure as shaking hands
i understand

why are some homes broken?
while others live so fine
liberty and justice for all
it's just: some people crawl
when we can afford the time
then we don't mind

someday every man will hold me as his brother
someday i'll fall asleep secure
someday every land will fly a white flag and no other
``Someday... '' we all know the cure

delusions of grandeur
the confusion is mine
the right to pitch and pander
exploiting, toying with her
when people pay the price
it's a very bad sign

as the sun comes up above the dry desert hills
one mountain shades my being
but sunbeam blinds my eyes
as i try and i try
the fire in the sky
burns my pride
i'm so ashamed

someday every man will hold me as his brother
someday i'll fall asleep secure
someday we'll stop hurting one another
``Someday... '' we all know the cure
