spoils of war

i talked today with my friend michael, the poet.
he was trying to ennoble, glorify, justify, and mystify the blood spilt in the middle east.
when i walked into his office, he was looking up something to rhyme with ``Gulf War.''
I said ``Hey Michael... ''
I said ``Hey Michael... ''
``Why don't you match it up with `no more,' or `what for?'''

what makes the world go `round?
what makes the world go `round?

he said: ``Only two digits worth of American lives were lost!''
(as if that were the only cost involved in a war)
he said: ``Look at the score--it's obvious, son... we won!''
I said ``Hey Michael... ''
I said ``Hey Michael... ''
why don't you cross examine your scores with ``no more,'' or ``what for?''

what makes the world go `round?
what makes the world go `round?

today i saw one thousand flags
Welcome Home & Well Done.
i can't believe we're saying that
as if these were the only ones.
i met a veteran in a wheelchair
on the street getting into a line.
he said ``Son, could you push me into the parade
that they forgot about in my time?''
``To the victors go the spoils of war...
I've lost my legs and I'm losing my mind.''
