noromdiam: poor birdie! Does Catula need to start wearing a jingly bell?
sean dreilinger: she had a jingle bell until recently, and her collarless sister caught all of the prey. but as soon as she managed to ditch the collarbell, she started bringing home all sorts of dead little offerings - mice, shrew, birds.
hollibobolli: Uh - our cat kills rabbits, squirrels - huge things. But my parent's backyard was like monster fest one year. We actually found one of the ginormous coy dead because it had tried to swallow a bird sitting on the side of the pond???

What was that old animal where all the animals went berzerk?
sean dreilinger: are you thinking of the movie Day of the Animals?

from 1977? i remember being scared of that when it came out on cable tv.
kuchinskas: letting your cats kill birds is really bad. They're also among the top predators of wild birds. the NYT magazine recently had a story saying they're pretty much responsible for wiping out whole species.
marhawkman: That's a bit overstated. the Steven's Island Wren is the only confirmed case. That required the combined efforts of several dozen cats(on a tiny island).

they have made significant impacts on several other populations though.
