Fresh coconut

Fresh coconut

It was only until this incident that I realized most people have no idea what a whole coconut looks like. It's about the size of a volleyball, but smooth, green, and shiny as if it's waxed. They cut off the green outside to make the coconut like the one shown here to lessen the weight and space the coconut takes up during transport. The coconut you normally see at the grocery store has that white pith taken away as well, leaving just the dark brown fiber covering.

With the fresh coconut, it is so full of juice that when you pick it up and shake it, there's no sloshing. Pound a clean screwdriver into the flesh and stick in a straw, et voila! Coconut water is very refreshing!
